TOWARDS MULTIPLE PHILOSOPHIES OF MUSIC RESEARCH
The New Lexicon seeks neither to codify a single authoritative philosophy of music research nor to determine in advance what such a philosophy must be. A field concerned with musical knowledge must remain responsive to inquiries that differ in object, history, method, medium, institutional location, and relation to the people and practices they address. Its concepts must be precise without pretending to universality, open to revision without losing critical force, and capable of addressing both the specificity of research decisions and the structures within which those decisions become possible.
The programme therefore aims to establish conditions from which multiple philosophies of music research may emerge: philosophies generated through inquiry, sharpened through critique, tested through dialogue, and revised through encounter. Such philosophies may disagree about the nature of evidence, the possibility of objectivity, the role of interpretation, the status of practice, the distribution of authority, or the responsibilities of research. Their value will not lie in convergence, but in their capacity to clarify what is at stake and renew the languages through which research understands itself.
To develop a new lexicon is to make new distinctions possible, but also to become more accountable for distinctions already in use. It is to ask what our concepts allow us to know, what they prevent us from knowing, whose experience they make legible, and how research practice might transform the terms of its own intelligibility. The residency begins from this task and invites researchers to undertake it collectively.
