WORKING METHOD
The residency is organised around sustained exchange rather than one-directional instruction. Participants bring projects already situated within particular disciplines, communities, practices, technologies, and histories. The task of the group is to create conditions in which those projects can be examined with rigour, generosity, and conceptual precision.
Presentation and discussion may engage writing, recordings, scores, performances, interviews, archival materials, field notes, datasets, software, visualisations, editions, exhibitions, documentation, or hybrid forms. No single medium is treated as the default form of research evidence. Materials are considered according to the questions they address, the claims they support, and the forms of understanding they make possible.
Participants will be encouraged to define their terms, identify assumptions informing their choices, clarify relations among questions, methods, evidence, and claims, and distinguish the aims of a project from the means through which those aims are pursued. Discussion will attend not only to what research intends to establish, but also to how its premises are embodied in its categories, procedures, technologies, modes of presentation, and conditions of reception.
Criticality is understood as a constructive and accountable practice. Feedback should not merely affirm a project or measure it against an external disciplinary norm. It should reveal consequences of methodological choices, identify tensions between claims and evidence, locate unexamined assumptions, and open viable paths for development. Participants will be asked to respond to others with the seriousness they expect for their own work.
The inquiry is intentionally plural. Its purpose is not to establish disciplinary consensus or subordinate every form of music research to one philosophical language. Productive disagreement, methodological difference, and conceptual tension are necessary conditions of collective inquiry. The programme seeks a discourse in which incompatible positions can be stated clearly, examined fairly, and developed through encounter.
